Overview

Straight SAE Flange

An SAE Flange is designed to serve as a connection tool for tubes, pipes, hoses, and other devices. They are also referred to as Code 61 or Code 62 Flanges. These codes are slightly different in size and pressure.

SAE Flanges are made following the ISO 6162 and SAE J518 standards and it uses the metric or UNC connection thread. The flange has an opening to allow a connection using 4 bolts and the complete set of the flange consists of a 1 piece of flat face flange and groove face flange, 4 pieces of allan cap screws, washers, and 1 piece of o-ring rubber.

The bolt grades used in connection are grades 8.8, 10.9, SS304, SS316 are compatible with SAE Flanges with each exhibiting its unique features.

Also, SAE Flanges are designed to work well with high-pressure systems and also large systems while providing a secure and leak-free connection during operation.

Code 61 & 62

Code 61 and Code 62 flanges are design styles of SAE Flanges used for many hydraulic applications and other activities.

Code 61 represents the pressure class 3000 PSI, while Code 62 represents pressure class 6000 PSI.

These flanges are similar in appearance, however, some differences dictate the best fit for each application.

Advantages of

SAE Flange

An SAE Flange has numerous advantages that account for the wide usage and acceptability in the mechanical market.

  • Widened connection capability as tubes measuring up to 5 inches can be used during assembly following the ISO 6162-1 and SAE J518 standards.

  • Ability to work well with highly-pressured machines with a maximum working pressure of 6000 PSI (420 bars).

  • Can be coupled with split flange clamps to aid disassembly after an operation.

  • Requires low tightening torque which enhances the performance of the machine even in restricted areas.

  • Uses only one sealing point for connection of pipes and other devices.

Temperature Range

Straight SAE Flange

The SAE Flange which is made from majorly steel materials can withstand a high temperature. Steel materials are made to withstand temperatures between -40⁰C and +120⁰C. For stainless steel flanges, a temperature range between -60⁰C and +50⁰C is suitable, however, a stainless steel flange uses an elevated temperature lessened by:

  • 4% (+50⁰C to +100⁰C)

  • 11% (+100⁰C to +200⁰C)

  • 20% (+200⁰C to +250⁰C)

More so, the o-ring materials are made of NBR with a temperature range between -34⁰C to 121⁰C and Viton 90 with a temperature range between -26⁰C to 205⁰C.

Assembly Instructions

SAE Flanges are easy to assemble, disassemble, and work on during maintenance checks. The flange is designed to allow an all-round positioning in the system and it uses several connection types.

Please refer to the steps below to aid the assembly of the SAE Flange:

  • Step 1: Carefully scrutinize the surface of the flange and ensure all dirt or contaminants are properly wiped off.

  • Step 2: Position the flange connection properly, thereafter, place the o-ring seal into the female washer groove. Insert the cap screws, washer, and bolts in the right holes.

  • Step 3: Slowly tighten the cap screws to the o-ring using your hand.

  • Step 4: While tightening, notice the right torque value for the flange and ensure it falls correctly. Over tightening may lead to damage to the flange.
