Body Identification

There are various forms of body identification that are present in flanges including SAE Flanges. They might be in the form of generic marking which has their standards and requirements. Most of these flanges have a particular marking system for body identification while some of these SAE Flanges have specific markings based on the manufacturer.

The specific marker is governed by a standard marking system having requirements. But in the general sense, all SAE Flanges have a form of body identification.

But before we look at identifications and markings of SAE Flanges, let’s look at the various ways by which we can identify the body of the flange.

1. What are the ways to identify the body of an SAE flange?

One of the problems you might come across when dealing with pipe systems and hydraulic systems is how to identify the body of an SAE Flange. Most people neglect this part deeming it irrelevant, but it is important to know how to identify SAE Flanges because it is important to sustain the integrity of a project.

Concern 1: Identifying the type of SAE Flange

This is regarded as the easiest step. The type of SAE Flange is usually printed on the body of the flange. All you need to do is look at the SAE Flange. There are different types of flanges which are SAE Flange, SAE Split Flange, SAE Blind Flange, SAE 90D Flange, and SAE Adapter.

Concern 2: Determining the size of the SAE Flange

This is quite a difficult step. In doing this, you have to calculate the inner diameter, the outer diameter, the bolt hole diameter, the bolt holes, and the bolt circle diameter. The bolt circle diameter of an SAE Flange is regarded as one of the most vital measurements to make when identifying a flange. It is defined as the measurement between the centre of the bolt hole to the centre of another bolt hole (the other bolt hole is located on the opposite side of the SAE Flange).

Concern 3: Considering the thickness of the SAE Flange

The thickness of an SAE Flange is highly important because it can be used to determine the pressure that the SAE Flange can withstand. The thicker the SAE Flange, the more pressure the flange can work with. When measuring the thickness, it is important to take note of the measurement of the outer rim.

Concern 4: Understand the SAE Flange standards

These standards are available for selecting the right flange when needed. This of course depends on the application of the flange to be used. Various SAE Flange standards are available. The SAE Flange complies with the standards of SAE J518 and ISO 6162.

Concern 5: Handling the pressure class of the SAE Flange

The pressure class of the SAE Flange is vital because it determines the pressure that the flange can operate or support without cracking or breaking. The various standards of flanges offer several pressure classes ranging from high or low. The SAE pressure class must be compatible with the pressure class of the part that will be fitted to it in the system.

Concern 6: Choosing the materials

It is vital to choose the material the SAE Flange is made of. This will depend on the environment where the SAE Flange will work. Stainless Steel is the corrosion-resistant material and it is applicable for long-term application while carbon steel is more to apply in general ground application.

2. What is the standard marking system of SAE Flange?

The system for marking the body of an SAE flange involves the following:

  • Manufacturers trademark or name

  • Material Designation

  • Rating Designation

  • Size Designation

  • Product Heat Numbers

  • SAE Flange design model
