Allan Cap Screw & Washer

SAE Flanges are used with hydraulic applications and systems. The main purpose of the SAE Flange is to connect pipes, hoses, and nozzles. For installation where flanges are not used, there is a tendency for leakages and malfunctioning of the systems. An Allan cap screw is a type of fastener used to connect hydraulic machine parts. The washer is also used when parts are connected with the Allan cap screw because it serves as a medium for even distribution of load. A bolt thread is another type of fastener coupled with a female thread.

1. What are SAE Flanges ?

SAE Flanges are connecting devices for pipes, hoses, and other pneumatic components. SAE Flanges are very important parts of hydraulic systems because they ensure a secure connection with no leakages during operations. SAE Flanges are designed with holes on the sides and in the middle. These holes serve as positions for bolts, nuts, and threads.

2. What are Allan Cap Screws and Washers ?

Allan cap screws and washers are types of fasteners used in machines and other hydraulic systems.

Allan Cap screws are also known as socket cap screws, socket screws, socket head cap screws, and Allan bolts. The cylindrical head of the Allan cap screw comes with a hexagonal drive hole.

Washers are used alongside bolts and nuts. The washer is designed as a disk-shaped thin plate with a bored hole in the middle. They are mostly made of plastic and metals. There are several types of washers and they are used based on the type of application intended. Of all types of washers, they can be broadly classified into three main forms – locking washers, plain washers, and spring washers. Plain washers are designed to serve as load distributors. This helps avoid the development of problems on the exact position of the fastener. Also, plain washers serve as a source of insulation against electricity.

Locking washers are used to ensure the tight connection of a fastener. In a case where the fastener is prone to loosen during operation, the locking washer is set as the device to guide against such. Spring washers are somewhat similar to locking washers. The spring washer ensures the fastener is safe when exposed to serious vibration.

3. What are Bolt Threads ?

Bolt threads are popularly called “bolts”. These are types of fasteners also used in hydraulic devices. The bolt has a head, fillet, and shaft. The shaft has a spiral ridge and this serves as the thread. The bolts cannot stand as a sole fastener. They are coupled with a nut and this is fastened using the required torque value for the system.

During operation, the bolt threads can easily get loosened due to vibration, however, to ensure a tight connection, the washers and cap screws are used together. Bolt threads like Allan cap screws and washers are available in various sizes because it needs to suit the needs of the intended application.

4. Why are SAE Flanges used with Allan Cap Screws and Washers

SAE Flanges are the major part of the connection between pipes and hoses. Hence, they have to be properly tightened to avoid loosening during operation. Any act of loosening of the flange can disrupt the general functioning of the system and also lead to leakages of process fluids. Thus, bolts and nuts play an important part in the installation. As stated earlier, SAE Flanges are designed with 4 holes in the side and the middle part (except blind flange). These 4 holes serve as the position port for bolts and nuts. Thus, Allan cap screws, washers, and bolt threads (fasteners) play an important role in sealing the connection on the gasket surface. Washers when used with SAE Flanges provide a smooth surface for the connection and help reduce the friction between flanges and nuts. From the aforementioned explanations, the need for Allan cap screws, washers, and bolts cannot be overemphasized. Due to these reasons, it is important to ensure the right size and required torque value is used. This will help reduce the impact of friction and improve the total functionality of the hydraulic system.
