ST52.3 Straight SAE Flange

ST52.3 Material is a steel plate alloy type made following the DIN 17100 standards. It is regarded as low alloy steel that is widely used due to its flexibility and good weldability properties. Also, ST52.3 material is termed amongst the materials with good cold-forming quality. The material has a new designation which is S355J0 (1.0553). ST52.3 has a tensile power between 490 MPa to 630 MPa and a yield power above 355 MPa. The material is mostly available in normalized and untreated conditions. The steel material is used for many applications such as bridge building, mobile tools, cranes, buildings, and so on.

The table below shows the major specifications of the ST52.3 material:

1. What is ST52.3 material?

Steel is one of the widely used materials worldwide because it fits into several applications. An estimate shows the production of steel to be around 1,928,000 tons as of January 2020. Steel materials are of four types; carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, and tool steel. Each steel type exhibits unique qualities and properties, however, carbon steels are most produced.

Carbon steel contains more carbon content than other alloy elements. They are divided into low, medium, and high carbon steel types and used according to the application intended. Low carbon steels contain about 0.30% carbon, medium and high contains 0.60% and 1.5% respectively. Carbon steels have high strength and are mostly used in operations requiring high strength like automotive machines, knives, and other hydraulic applications.

ST52.3 material is made following the DIN 17100 standards. The material was initially known as the ST52.3 material, however, the designation was changed to S355 afterward. ST52.3 or S355 is a material with medium tensile strength and consists of a low percentage of carbon and manganese. It is classified under the low carbon steel types. The material is also known for its high resistance to temperature and good weldability. The material is available in untreated and normalized conditions.

2. What are the differences between ST 52 and ST52.3?

ST 52 and ST 52.3 are two different steel types, however, they have some similarities and differences. For the similarity, both sheets of steel have the same mechanical properties as shown above. Also, both steel has excellent weldability and machinability to work well in various tools used in industries. They contain less carbon and manganese and they were last reviewed in the year 1984.

Despite these similarities, the two materials have a major difference which is explained below:

ST 52 materials are specifically designed to work for pressure service with a working pressure measuring between 160 bar and 300 bars. Unlike the ST52.3 material that is more for structural uses.

In other words, the ST52 material will fit in more in operations requiring pressures while the latter will work with structural operations. ST52.3 materials are great for high pressures and temperature applications.

The ST52.3 material is widely used in different industries for several uses. Some of its uses are discussed below:

  • Automotive Industry: ST52.3 material is used in the automotive industry for piping systems, airflow, and water flow systems manufacture.

  • Construction Industries: they are used in construction industries for scaffolding, shipbuilding, domestic uses, and structural operations and incorporated into other huge engineering operations.

  • Transportation Work: ST52.3 is suitable for use in transportation industries for oil and gas systems, high and low-pressure hydraulic systems, chemicals, hot water, and so on.
